I’ve used the ClassPad 330 while taking college math classes and now as a math teacher, and I’d recommend it almost without reservation to both students and teachers who are learning and teaching math. Whether it’s an algebraic equation or a limit, derivative, or integral, it can solve almost any standard problem you’d see in high school math or the first year or two of a college math major sequence. (Not talking about word problems or proofs of course.) It can solve these problems symbolically or numerically and in ‘math textbook form’ for both input and output. The lack of standard input keys is no issue because the stylus-based touch-screen contains hundreds of math operations in logically-organized menu sections. This calculator also has powerful statistics, series/sequences, programming, standard-graphing, and 3d-graphing tools. It has a useful ’split-screen’ feature where you can, for example, view your definite integral solution on the top half and the graph of that integrals area on the bottom half. Speaking of the screen, the display is clear and easy for my eyes to focus on even after spending hours solving problems in low-light conditions. While the ClassPad 330 may not be ‘legal’ on every math test you take, it’s proven indispensable to me in studying and preparing for tests (and now creating and double-checking tests of my own). As a separate product, you can buy an emulator version (ClassPad Manager) that is very useful for teachers, as well as create activities and demonstrations for students with just the ClassPad 330 itself. One caveat though–this is for students of math and science (as well as teachers, engineers, and scientists in the working world) who want to delve deeper and perform, mathematically speaking, at their peak. If you’re taking a college algebra class for a liberal arts major, have no interest in math (which is completely fine of course, English was my first major and I love the liberal arts), and will never take another math class again, this calculator may not be for you.

From reading most peoples bad reviews, they seem to want a standard scientific calculator. THIS IS NOT A STANDARD SCIENTIFIC CALCULATOR AND NOT A GRAPHING CALCULATOR.

The purpose of this calculator is to replace your TI-83 or 84 if you can’t use a graphing calculator on a test. The idea is that it has the same layout as those graphing calculators. Personally, I love my TI-84 and hate that I can’t use it on tests, and I hated practicing to use a standard scientific calculator. One of my friends had this calculator and I borrowed it, tried it for two minutes, and was like “What the hell have I been wasting my time around with other calculators for.”

Bottom line: Buy this calculator if you can’t use your 84 on a test.

Texas Instruments TI-30X IIS 2-Line Scientific Calculator Specifications

There are many inexpensive scientific calculators on the market, but few boast the two-line display and other advanced features users get with the TI-30x IIS. The display shows the equation you are creating on the top line, and the numbers or symbols you are currently entering on the second line. Once the equation is solved, the results are displayed on the second line, and you can use the four arrow keys on the front of the calculator to edit the original equation in any way you like for a recalculation. Better still, pressing the up arrow repeatedly lets you browse through a cache of dozens of previous calculations, meaning you can look back to see the answer to a problem you solved two minutes ago, two days ago, or whenever.

The device uses solar power when possible but can fall back on the internal batteries (which are included) if there isn’t enough light. The buttons wiggle around a little too much and require a firm keystroke to register input, but the fact that input can be followed by looking at the output on the first line helps to cut down on mistakes. There is a shift key that doubles the functions of most buttons, and although the TI-30X IIS isn’t festooned with as many buttons or functions as some other calculators we’ve tested in this price range, it’s still very capable. There are three angle modes (degrees, radians, and grads), scientific and engineering notation modes, and even one- or two-variable statistical modes. Five variables can also be assigned to their own memory slots. The documentation is lacking, as everything is presented on a single folded sheet of paper, but Texas Instruments did manage to pack several illustrated examples on the page. I have used my 48GX since high school, and it finally died after about 11 years. I have had my 49g+ for about 6 months. I didn’t want to buy used, and I didn’t trust buying a “new” 48GX, so I went with the 49g+. Now that I’m out of college, I still need to have the scientific, unit conversions, and occasionally the downloadable design programs that are out there. I certainly admit that the calculator was built for more “user friendliness” which mostly means that it takes longer to use, but the calculator still is an HP. I have to admit that the USB connection is much better than the old 4-wire system. As an engineer, I have no real use for the SD card slot, but if I’m on the top of a mountain and I need to design a vertical curve, I guess it’ll be handy.

Overall, I would have preferred to keep my 48GX. Like all engineers, I think it’s better to keep the devil you know. I have not experienced any of the problems that others have stated. Sifting through their complaints, though, and knowing how much I abused my 48GX, I think if I used my 49g+ like I have my 48GX, I’m sure I would have broken it by now. The 49 somehow doesn’t seem as sturdy.

I am still pleased with my purchase. I hope though, that HP will see some of the complaints and take them into consideration.

I find that the Casio CFX 9850GB actually is much easier to use than the TI-83. It shows more detail not only because of the color, but I find it doing stuff that the TI does not(like showing a “hole” in the graph). Also, I find that when I want it to find min and max, I don’t have to set boundaries, I just push a button. I’m in precalc and have never used a graphing calculator before so I read the manual like another required text. The manual is easy to follow. I’m afraid I have little use of the TI, the Casio takes me to the answer quicker.
